Veneers and crowns are two of the most popular ways to transform a smile — but they solve slightly different problems. Here's how they compare, so you can walk into your consultation knowing exactly which questions to ask.

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a thin shell — usually porcelain — bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the colour, shape and alignment of the visible part of the tooth while keeping most of your natural tooth intact. Veneers are mainly a cosmetic solution, perfect for improving the look of healthy teeth.

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap that covers the entire tooth, restoring its strength as well as its appearance. Because it wraps the whole tooth, more preparation is needed — but that also means a crown can protect a tooth that's cracked, heavily filled or root-treated.

The key differences

  • Coverage — veneers cover the front face of the tooth only; crowns cover the whole tooth.
  • Tooth preparation — veneers need minimal reshaping; crowns require more of the natural tooth to be removed.
  • Best for — veneers for cosmetic changes on healthy teeth; crowns for damaged or weakened teeth.
  • Durability — both last many years with good care; crowns are generally the stronger option for heavy biting forces.

So which should you choose?

If your teeth are healthy and you mainly want to improve how they look — brightening the colour, closing small gaps or fixing minor chips — veneers are often the more conservative choice. If a tooth is damaged, weak or already heavily restored, a crown gives you both protection and a natural appearance. In fact, many full smile makeovers use a thoughtful combination of the two.

A quick note: this article is general information and isn't a substitute for a professional examination. The condition of each individual tooth is what ultimately guides the decision.
